response to comments page...

You are without question one of the most brilliant and qualified people I have met. So I must know this......

Why in the hell did you limit yourself to this position? Why do you think you are only "qualified" to do menial work for lousy people?
Wait... even if I was blessed with certain gifts does not mean to those who weren't deserve shitty jobs which exploit and profit exponentially off their efforts. Those who want to create a more just society must fight for everyone not just smart rich people...

The issue isn't union versus nonunion. The issue is "Jim choosing to work for assholes."
That seems like a terrible argument for whatever position you are trying to uphold... individualism I guess...

FIrst I looked for a job for over two months. I had to have group health insurance because of my preexisting condition and we my health care expenses far greater than they are now--currently 800-2000 a month...

so Jim choosing to work for assholes shows no context for what my circumstance were... and speak to has weak an argument people who argue the pull yourself up by the bootstraps really have. I know you aren't being condescending to me... but its extremely condescending as a way to make your case to many people who were far worse off than I was... it lacks any context for what many people are going through, the job prospects for low-skilled workers... and the other variables...

I currently work for a small business. I have flex-time, retroactive health care (became active my first day on the job), a good salary, etc. How did I get the job? I'm as qualified as you. I'm certainly no smarter than you. I was diagnosed with ADHD and attended a special school during my formative years. However, there was a trend towards tossing young black boys in the "special ed" category in certain schools. My parents fought and got me into regular schools. I do, however, have a slight reading disability. My father is dyslexic and I suppose I inherited it. Regardless, I am not the sum of my limitations. And neither are YOU.
Sorry... pull yourself up by your bootstraps... while makes the arguer feel good about themselves is not an argument that deals with the numbers/context in a broader sociological vantage point. Its neat to see what you are doing... honestly it is and kudos to you for it. But its a logical fallacy... anecdotal evidence which is both a hasty generalization and biased sample fallacy at the same time... the "I have a friend who saw... x" "I know someone who does y" is a classic conservative tactic... it allows one to attack those outside of their network, culture, community... the out group... but not feel the need to actually dig into the issue...

No excuses buddy!
condescension... sigh... and conservative use it so often that its whine and speaks poorly to conservatives as intellectuals.

My friend's husband has dyslexia and earns enough to qualify for Obama's tax hike!
tell me who qualifies for an obama tax hike? Obama cuts taxes for middle income earners and like 99% of small business... if he does make enough for a tax hike... he has already benefited so much from government that it is tacky, naive, and selfish of him to the point of pathological to whine that he's getting his taxes increased. The government is the reason he is that wealthy...

I used to work at Office Max. I received various promotions and worked in three departments at once! Things were not that bad. However, I wanted more money for less stress. So I quit. Guess what? I was literally hired in my present job a day later.
the data doesn't reflect your story... once again you are using a logical fallacy of anecdotal evidence... as I said its a classic argumentative move by conservatives but you don't need to use it just cause its popular...

If I can do it, so can you.
anecdotal evidence... condescension... these aren't arguments they are tactics to make the person who have achieved things worthy of praise feel powerful and special and makes others feel small... Nobility my friend... nobility...

Companies are not responsible for you and will not take care of you. In fact, the current trend is to take away benefits such as health care, and retirement plans.
which is why libertarianism post the industrial revolution... at least in its popular conception is authoritarianism cleverly disguised... companies benefit from government... why should the population put up with exploitation??? companies don't need to exist for us to have an economy...

In a nutshell... nobility, nobility, nobility... not everyone gets the benefits of others circumstances, biology, and sometimes random luck. Conservatives like to exploit the things to manipulate, degrade, and exploit. I work hard... just cause I'm smart enough to see how damn lucky I am and have seen circumstances that can be improved doesn't make me whiny... a complainer... it makes me smart enough to know I am damn Lucky... and empathetic enough to not exploit others. I want to help protect and empower people... not cause everyone to see their neighbor as a threat...

Do you really think I was being condescending? I meant it in all sincerity. I always try to say what I mean and mean what I say. I do not speak down to people. When I wrote "buddy" I meant just that. I think of you as a friend.

I made no attempt to demean your situation, and apologize if you took it as such. In my way I attempted to pay you tribute. I pointed out a simple observation from interacting with you these past months. You are a driven, well thought individual. You took initiative to accomplish certain goals. I see "hard work, drive, and passion." You see "biology." Tomatoes, to-mah-toes. Neither of us are wrong. We just "are."

I shared my past experiences to illustrate a point, not to make a hasty conclusion. I took critical thinking, mind you. It's the only class I made a perfect score in. I'm well aware of various fallacies, including ones you made. I choose to give others charity. Especially others I respect.

I have met no individuals incapable of improving their situation without learning the means to do so. I sincerely don't see insurmountable circumstances in my world view. It is entirely possible we both examined the same data and came to different conclusions based on our differing opinions of the world.

Again, I ask you to send me links to specific data. Or paste them. I don't comment here to nag or annoy you. I'm here to learn through discourse. If I am in er, please cite specific data. If it's an issue you wrote about in the past, show me the link.
