Boortz has a history of terrible policy positions. He makes up for this through invective and verbal intimidation...

Just how does The Chosen One feel about the 2nd Amendment? After the Supreme Court ruled on the DC gun ban Obama was somewhat trapped. His previous position in favor of the ban was inoperative, so he had to come up with a new position.

Could is possibly be that he respects the courts decisions? Could it possibly be that he realizes coalition building (i.e. leadership.. gasp) is about accepting some things you disagree with for a greater good. Is Boortz all knowing--or just trying to take a cheap shot?

I know, I know, I know... He's an entertainer so he is supposed to be a little crass, a little rough around the edges... but I see people every day who take him as gospel so a little hyperbole is fair? No? You tell me...

Ahhhhh .... But he's so suave, so debonair, and he speaks so well! It doesn't really matter what he says, but he sure says it good!

Once again attacking Obama for his ability to speak, communicate, and inspire people to believe in a government that will protect and empower them. This is also known as leadership.

When anyone who is not a Democrat or a liberal succeeds at anything .. a liberal will tell you it is because they cheated.

The real reasons that you don't want people like Joe Biden in the White House is because he has three priorities as a politician: Ending the war in Iraq, universal healthcare, and building up government schools. Not to mention that he also believes in this global warming scam.

These seem like good priorities, and an educated position on global warming.

Our schools are failing, the war is weakening our national security and we have failed to protect our troops once they come home. Universal Health Care? We rank 37th in the world for Health Care and spend 3 to 4 times as much as others.

Wow is all one should say. A vote for McCain empowers people who hold views like Neil Boortz... Obama in 2008. The lesser of two evils... but far less evil than the policies of guys like Boortz.

In a court appearance Wenning tried to use the "choice of evils" defense, saying that blocking the entrance to the site was less "evil" than the taxpayers subsidizing a day labor center that helps illegal aliens get jobs. (Uh oh ... should I have said "undocumented immigrants?")

Question. Can you grandstand on free-markets... and claim you support free markets when you obviously do not?

For those who don't know. Free market theory include... free movement of trade, finance, and LABOR. Free-Market... free flows...

Who could lecture others on how noble the free market is... and how evil and or incopetant those who don't support it are? Boortz's doesn't support the free market if he's worried about illegal immigration--maybe he doesn't care and is just pointing out this story...

If he does oppose migration of labor he is making a caviat... then he is moving from economics to the realm of politics where one must focus on the greater good in the society vs. economic theory debate. One man's passionate caviat to markets is another mans evil. Thats why and when elections come into play. When you lose public opinion which conservative always do. You cry conspiracy... you cry elitism... you cry socialism I guess...

Oh, and I thought Neal was a libertarian?

You heard this one, didn't you? About 100 college and university presidents have gathered together to promote the idea of lowering the drinking age to 18. Reason? To put it bluntly, these college presidents can't – or don't want to control underage drinking in their student bodies. Their solution is to lower the age. Appoint me to be the chairman of the board of regents and we'll get this problem solved. You drink one underage drink .. you're out. Gone. Tuition and all other fees forfeited. Campus security will escort you to your dorm room and stand by while you put your stuff in some black plastic bags, take your student ID card, and escort you off the campus. You'll be issued a warning never to return, and arrested for criminal trespass if you do.

We think they are responsible enough to fight and die... but not drink. Thats an infringement on Liberty. The hobgoblin of libertarians all over the world. Why would he pontificate on Liberty but not actually apply it?

Such is the sad state of affairs within "Libertarian" thought. This Libertarian can only feel sad for this sorry state...

Actually I'm not much of blue blood Democrat

As many of my readers know I am active within the Democratic party. I've come home to roost could you say?

I see it as the lesser of two evils and have no concerns about saying that. I realized a little after the war started that it was my obligation to work within the political struture to get improvements. Until we have instant run-off voting the Democrats are the only game in town. I'd love to see active third parties but as things stand they have no clout or impact--I shall yawn if you feel the need to rehash the 2000 election, you have no empirical case to make but I'll certainly argue with you for posterities sake...

The Demcrats are far better on the economy and truly work within the fundamental principle that we are all in this together--hence they have a better economic approach since markets function best when we harness everyone and focus on prosperity and fourishing as opposed to individual success in making money as the core goal. Things like the SCHIP bill which Republican's opposed in droves--chuck hegel and a few others withstanding (does anyone have which Repub. supported that one? Also items like the Iraq war and terrorism--Chuck Hegel withstanding--are still very much distinctions between the two parties. I don't see third parties as legitimate or impactful this year--but that is for everyone to decide as individuals; I can't decide for others, though I am willing to go the extra mile to make my case if desired.

Davidfl, regarding the fair tax I was hoping to have mroe time to discuss but breifly. Consumption taxation at its core seems to be a very worthy goal. It may be a wash for low income people, though I'm still not 100%. But I still remain unconvinced and hence opposed that 1) it would work in reality the way it does on paper--as things a want to do; and 2) the inclusive and exclusive usage seems manipulative but I can't put my finger on it--hence why at the very least it seems questionable as a political/economic tactic. I'm a pretty smart guy but if I can't see why you feel it is to be important others won't either.

So I'll work on toning down the rehtoric, still work to learn more on it; yet I remain unconvinced.

That in a nutshell is my concession. Keep at me on this one... I'll keep working on it.

The supreme court decision yesterday

Our founding fathers would be very happy today checks and balances worked the way it was designed. They fought and died to give us protections that the king consistently violated--our country has been blessed with their wisdom. These protections have created a stable nation, a stable economy, able to overcome any challenge facing it with integrety and a refusal to accept the post-modern relativism that says we are not obligated to uphold the same moral values we impose on others. It has given us a strong Republic which we must be good stewards of. As i'm always taught by my mentor--"cooler heads will prevail" and they did today.

Bob Barr the Libertarian Presidential candidate had a great statement on today's supreme court ruling which I wanted to pass on.

U.S. Supreme Court Affirms Fundamental Civil Liberties, Says Bob Barr
June 13, 2008 6:11 pm EST

Atlanta, GA -- Yesterday the U.S. Supreme Court made two critically important rulings. The first concluded that detainees in Guantanamo Bay could seek habeas corpus relief in federal court. The second stated that an American held by U.S. forces in Iraq was entitled to the protection of habeas corpus.

With these two decisions the Court "has reaffirmed one of the foundations of American liberties, the historic writ of habeas corpus—which requires the authorities to show cause for an arrest," explains Bob Barr, the Libertarian Party candidate for president. The justices did not order anyone released, instead leaving that decision up to the trial judge after a full and fair hearing.
Barr, who since leaving Congress in January 2003 has become one of the nation's leading advocates for protecting privacy and civil liberties, explained that the decision "is as much a victory for the American people as it is for any particular litigant." The right to habeas corpus is enshrined in the Constitution: "by allowing a defendant to seek relief in court, habeas corpus is one of the most important legal limits on government," explains Barr.

However, he observes, these decisions, though welcome, "are only the start in a long process of reasserting our liberties." Congress must not, for instance, cave in and allow warrant-less surveillance of American citizens under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA). To this end, Barr joined with the ACLU, Liberty Coalition, American Library Association, Citizen Outreach, and other organizations to oppose a proposal by Sen. Christopher Bond (R-MO) to limit judicial review and gut other proposed safeguards against government abuse.

The threat is bipartisan, warns Barr. "The Bush administration has spent seven years attempting to give the executive branch unprecedented powers without any accountability, while the Democrats have refused to use their authority to hold the president and his appointees accountable," Barr explains. And after pretending to be a Republican maverick, "Sen. McCain's staff says he would spy on Americans without warrants just as President Bush has done."

"We must give the U.S. government the tools necessary to defeat terrorism, but in doing so we must not sacrifice the freedoms that make America great," says Barr. Today's Supreme Court rulings are a good beginning. Now, he emphasizes, "It is up to the rest of us to finish the job of restoring America's constitutional liberties."
Barr represented the 7th District of Georgia in the U. S. House of Representatives from 1995 to 2003, where he served as a senior member of the Judiciary Committee, as Vice-Chairman of the Government Reform Committee, and as a member of the Committee on Financial Services. Prior to his congressional career, Barr was appointed by President Reagan to serve as the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia, and also served as an official with the CIA.

Since leaving Congress, Barr has been practicing law and has teamed up with groups ranging from the American Civil Liberties Union to the American Conservative Union to actively advocate every American citizens' right to privacy and other civil liberties guaranteed in the Bill of Rights. Along with this, Bob is committed to helping elect leaders who will strive for smaller government, lower taxes and abundant individual freedom.

Its unfortunate that some feel that even as they ask "why they hate us" we conduct ourselves showing the same disdain for law, order, and basic civil liberties which the fundamentalist have. Since 2003 recruits for Al Queida has sky-rocketed, the middle east has destabilized, Iran has grown in strength, Bin Ladin is still on the loose, Afghanistan and Iraq are worse off than before the war according to experts, and public opinion in the middle east and across the globe has dropped to levels that makes it hard for us to work within these countries to find and stop the terrorist. We will win with free speech, open markets, and strong legal mechanisms that allow neither for kicking down doors in the quiet of the night, nor secret trials without access to legal protections.

At least we can still count on the supreme court. And fortunately the Democratic leadership is working hard to keep in committee the Impeachment effort of Kuncich because they correctly point out that impeachment only divides us and keeps us from addressing the many important issues we need to be facing--such as ranking 37th in the world for health care. The supreme courts ruling today proves this to be true.
